Why? There was nothing in any information about 9.2.1 that said there
was an update.

What puzzles me is that the installation log said that many (all?)
components of AppleScript were updated. I already had 1.6 installed, so
why did it update it?

I didn't get that warning. Is your version of OS X updated to 10.0.4?
