So I'm trying to figure out what the one command is, and what the three elven commands, seven dwarven commands, and nine nazg{l commands are.
If we're talking people, then I think we need to make William Cook be the one. He was the single person who guided the creation of AppleScript from start to finish. His three were not in opposition, but working with him, and that would be Donn Denman, Warren Harris and Jens Alfke. The seven isn't quite enough to cover the rest of the AppleScript engineering and QA team and I don't think it's fair to marketing and management folks for them to be the nazg{l, do you? Although now that I think about it, nine is about the number of managers AppleScript had, wasn't it? (Are you out there Donald?)
This doesn't even count the second string, like Chris Espinosa (You are number 8. Who is number 1?), Rich Nygord (got the PPC port running) and Chris Nebel (who makes appearances here), who deserve a lot of credit for carrying the torch.
Also, hands need to go out to the developers for supporting AppleScript. Ben Waldmen of Microsoft, who shipped a scriptable Excel before AppleScript shipped. Dave Winer, whose existence required creating the OSA and the generic component. Cal Simone, for being the language zealot. Dave Shayer, who probably is more responsible than anyone for keeping AppleScript from dying during "The Dark Times," for implementing the scripting in Quark. The fact that there are too many to list here is another testament to all these people's efforts.
