AppleScript and Video Capture?

I've researched this issue with little luck, so here goes...
I'm very familiar with Apple's Video Player application that allows certain
S-Video enabled Macs (7500/8500, etc) to display and even capture images as
stills or QuickTime movies. It's a great little app and it's also
AppleScriptable. I'm currently working with a client that's using it to
capture images from his microscope (which has an S-Video output) and then
place the images into a FileMaker DB.
The problem is that this same person wants to replace their aging 7500 with
a newer, shinier Mac (model to be determined). The second he does that, his
nifty solution using Apple's Video Player/AppleScript/FileMaker breaks.
I've already found several external boxes that can take the S-Video signal
and convert it into something (FireWire???) that a newer Mac can deal with.
Now all I then need to find an application which is AppleScriptable and
allows image capture to occur. BTW, iMovie is NOT AppleScriptable.
So...Anyone got any ideas on the hardware/software just described??? I'd
love to hear about the solutions others are using and will summarize.
Thanks!
