This definitely should not be happening. It almost sounds as though your OS
X install was not completed properly. My OS X supplied scripts all function
just fine.

You are not, by chance, trying to use the OS X scripts while running in OS
9.1 or Classic, are you?

If no one else responds to this with more knowledge, I'd suggest trying a
reinstall of os x.
