I agree you should try AppleWorks 6.2, which includes the DataViz
translators. However, the only 2 times I've ever had to translate a Word
document with embedded Excel spreadsheets, the cell formatting was all
up the creek. To my recollection, it looked as though some cells were 1
character wide, and 20 high, or cells outside the page margins. There
wasn't any data lost, and all I did was to click in the spreadsheet (in
the AppleWorks translation) to get into the spreadsheet environment,
then select all, copy & paste into a new spreadsheet to see what was
there. If all you're interested is the data, then this shouldn't be too
much of a problem with a script, but it's awful to look at.
One thing to keep in mind is that the translators don't translate any
Excel macro's that may be embedded into the spreadsheet.
There's a very informative site for AppleWorks scripting at
<www.tandb.com.au/appleworks/>. T&B also did a good series of articles
on scripting AppleWorks in the AppleWorks Users Group <www.awug.org/>.
You might want to consider Tex-Edit Plus for a extensively scriptable
text editor. It handles styled text (BBEdit doesn't), and has good
search/replace functions (search forward/back from insertion point,
search within selection, etc.). Tex-Edit Plus can be found at
<www.nearside.com/trans-tex/>, and there is quite a good archive of
Tex-Edit Plus scripts at <www.malcolmadams.com/te/>.
Good luck.
