I don't have a direct answer to this question, because I'm not sure it would be possible. Why not spliting your applet in two pieces, the 'main' part that you would put anywhere and launch manually if needed, the other that you would put in the startup folder, it would launch 'main' with a particular parameter or through a different handler?
