sound control panel question

Greetings gentle script folk,

I am new to applescript, therefore....I am new to applescript. I have been threatening to dive into this for a single reason and now I see I will have to do so for many other reasons.

But first my problem:

How can I set up a script to turn the volume of my sound control panel to "mute" so that I can place it in my "shutdown items" folder? I then wish to run a script to enable the volume at startup....I am driving myself...and possibly the neighborhood...into apoplexy every time I restart and forget to turn down my @#%$ speakers after listening to "insert your favorite artist here".

I have wished this to be so for so very long and I am appalled that it doesn't appear to be recordable or possibly scriptable...can I dive into the language and make this dream come true? I fear one more mistake and my speakers are surely blown....

Thank you in advance for the kind words of encouragement.
