Ping utility for OS8.6?

Does anyone know of scriptable ping utility or ping OSAX that will run under
OS8.6? I'd like to do some automatic network reporting over Xmas.

I've looked at MacPing but, while you can script it to ping, you don't seem
to get any results returned. Any other suggestions?
