Forking background processes from "do shell script" call

I'm trying to set up an AppleScript to launch MySQL and I find that my "do shell script" call works, but never terminates, even if given a timeout.

I presume that this is because it is forking a background process that never terminates.

Can anyone suggest a workaround?
