Extracting Text from a PDF or EPS

Can anybody lead me in a direction that would enable me to extract text from
a PDF or EPS file? I've used the getlines and readfromfile commands
(Tanaka's Osas) and the Open for Access command on text files before, but
I'm not at all sure how to go about getting text from any other file format.
