sub-folders and file listing

I am writing a script which compares the contents of a text list against the file listing of a folder. Is there a simple way to create a variable that includes the file listings of all subfolders of a given folder?

folder
subfolder
file1
file 2
subfolder
file 3
file 4
file 5
folder 2
subfolder
subfolder
file 6

what I would like returned is file1, file2, file3, file4, file5, file6
without any of the subfolder names.

I'd appreciate any suggestions. Thanks.
