Applescript speed within Filemaker

I've written an applescript that checks a designated folder to see if a file
associated with a record of a FM5 database exists, then marks the record
appropriately, goes on to the next record an repeats. I'm running from with
a Filemaker script (the do Applescript command), but it seems slower than it
should on a new G4/533.
Would I get faster results calling an outside applescript from Filemaker?
