Because when you double-click a compiled script, it has to run from the
script editor. But because the script is not editable (that's what "run
only" means), the script editor can't open it; thus resulting in the
alert you received.

If you save it as a run-only applet, then it will run.

No, there's nothing unique about your setup. Everything is working as
designed, just as it should work.
