AppleScript to ODBC?

New to this list - so sorry if this is an oft' asked question....

Is there a simple way (OSAX, or something else) of communicating with an
ODBC database from Apple Script?

I've searched some archives and found some methods that rely on ODBC client
components in third party software such as File Maker or Excel that can be
driven from AS - but these rely on the client environment having the app.

I can get information out of a DB using ASP to process the SQL and the
Download URL addition to pick up the data. This is better than the above
because I have greater control over the server environment than the client.

I would, however, prefer not to have a third layer at all. Also, the above
method can not load the data directly into any Apple Script object or
variable, and requires some intermediary file handling on the client
machine.

The more complex a process is the greater the likelihood for bugs - so I
thought I'd ask if a more direct access method is available.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
