JR has given an excellent run-down here. The problem with his last advice is
that the AppleScript-Users list archives are not searchable. According to
our very own list gnome, Chuq von Rospach - yes, that's his real name,
correctly spelled - making the archives searchable is a higher priority
than his eventual solution to the character-mangling problem (enabling HTML
when it's safe to do so, the only solution he will contemplate). But he
won't put a date on either. By my guess, we'll have searchable archives by
2006, and an end to the character-mangling problem by 2014. Or thereabouts.
Stick around, why don't you?

In the meantime, I don't wish on you searching these archives
chronologically, digging back through every day's messages until you hit a
link or two. You'd be much better off searching the excellently-organized
archives for the MacScrpt list, where this issue was probably discussed in
even more detail, more times. There are even two different sets of archives,
one in Melbourne, Australia, one in Dartmouth, NH. Both searchable. I forget
which is better.

I'll see if I can dig the URLs out from somewhere. Or maybe someone else can
beat me to it.
