Piping in a little late here... My experience is exactly the same as
Jolly's and Emmanuel's.

I have one script that has been distributed over the net that has used the
raw event code technique for two years now (IRCmagic). This script is used
by thousands of Mac users with different system configurations. Since I
started using this technique in the script, it has never failed me. It's
the only solution to the problem as far as I am concerned.
