My HD has installed thousands of scriptables and recordables text editors,

but, "Scriptable Text Editor" is a text editor? And, where I can find it?
You may use Tex-Edit Plus from Tom Bender instead. It adapted the Scriptable Text Editor's dictionary but went very much further. A good choice to customize the application is scripting it. And there is a AppleScript for Tex-Edit Plus web-site too.
The original Scriptable Text Editor written by Apple is part of the AppleScript SDK 1.3.4 available from apple.com -> developers.
