limiting viewable list items in a dialog box

How can I specify the number of items shown in a dialog box (list)?

Problem: I have an instance where nearly a hundred choices are available and
the dialog box stretches from nearly the top of the screen to the bottom
filled w/names. I'd like to reduce the size of the box and allow the user to
scroll to obtain his choice.
