This general sort of naming was used before Microsoft was a teen aged kid
hacking with BASIC.
And further development was done outside of Microsoft after that point,
along several different tracks (some of which put the type information at
the end of the name).
Microsoft has done an excellent job of codifying one form of it and using
it reasonably consistently and successfully in-house. When the house is
that big, you need to do something.
