I am disturbed by your assertion that you feel entitled to extract
user names "for any purpose I choose." (I see entitlement in the
words you chose to use.) Legal issues aside, I feel that if you, or
anyone else, were to send me unsolicted promotional email, having
extracted my name from a mailing list, then you, he, or she, would be
betraying my trust as a participant on a mailing list.
Any list, whether public or private, can set up rules or restrictions
that subscribers must submit to as a subscriber. What do Apple's
list rules say? (I haven't read them since they were revised a
couple of years ago.)
