That's it! Thanks, I never checked the URL suite in the FMPro dictionary. Obviously this is the only thing that will work with a hosted file *outside* a LAN.
Only one problem though... How do you specify a password inside a script?? Any help greatly appreciated.

You might try this syntax from FMPro's AS dictionary
("FMP3://[host]/filename")

tell application "FileMaker Pro"
activate
getURL "FMP3://tx-fmpro/QA_Phoenix.FP3"
end tell
