I did something similar to create "Remote Finder" for managing our
client's Macs remotely. There's a very old version and description at:
http://www.tandb.com.au/development/remote_finder/

This looked very promising but when I downloaded it it wouldn't
do anything but display a menu bar. Several of the menu items are replicated
(2 entries: plain & with "..." suffix) and selecting them results in
a "window doesn't understand" message - there is no window visible.

As mentioned on the page, it's a very rough development version. Sorry about the "rough" :-)

I just downloaded it myself and tried it successfully. After launching, choose "New..." in the List menu. Then choose a remote Finder in the app picker. It will show a list of items on that machine's desktop, which you can double click etc to navigate through folders.

You can choose "New..." again to select a Finder on another Mac, or just choose "New" to open another connection to the same Mac.

If there is enough (a lot of ;-) interest, I could polish up a current version, with completed interface, extensibility to add your own script actions to remote Finder objects etc.
