The file type and creator type are not stored in the file. They are stored
separately, as part of the Finder information for the file. That is the
third part of the two-part Macintosh file.

Sherlock does this quite nicely, as has been pointed out. (Both versions
of Sherlock.) So did Find File.

Rumor has it that Mac OS 9.1 will be released sometime. Sub-rumor has it
that the get info window has been adjusted in Mac OS 9.1, but I have no
idea whether the adjustment includes this obvious--to many of us--need.
[It's not obvious to someone who just bought their first computer,
however...it probably doesn't belong in the General display in the get info
window (particularly since it's nearly certain that some of the codes are
obscene in some language(s).]
