A while back I needed to do some very redundant work for the department I
worked in to FreeHand files. Place manual crops, registration, and a job
ticket onto every page of every file. In trying to script Freehand I found
you have good control over placing objects, but very little feedback. To
work around this I used the 'DocReport' command to generate a report of the
file, and then would read that file with my script. It turned out to be a
very easy way to get the information my script needed to make it's
measurements.
