Here's a thought: The Finder is in fact multithreaded, and we've all noticed
that it sometimes takes one thread a little while to update the user
interface after something like a copy has been completed. The episodic
nature of your issue suggests that sometimes the Finder is catching up with
itself more quickly than at other times. I have had success using the
Finder's Update command (is that what it's called?) in such situations, to
force the interface to update immediately. This has cured similar problems
for me.
