I've lost the thread so I'm not sure who said what regarding
the Enigma machine. Frequently Enigma and Purple are
confused. Enigma, the German machine, was solved by the
British with Polish and French involvement; Purple, the
machine used for Japanese diplomatic traffic, was solved by
the US Army Signal Intelligence Service. It was the latter
code that figures prominently in the lore of Pearl Harbor. A
good book on the whole subject of codebreaking in WWII is
"Battle of Wits", by Stephen Budiansky, ISBN 0-684-85032-7.
