I can corroborate your observations. At the moment the only workaround I know of is to use Prefab Player to plug the hole caused by the bug in the "insert pages" command.

We recently developed a Quark/Acrobat work-flow system for a Mac based
client using AppleScript to Export EPS pages in Quark 3.3 and Stitch the
single PDF pages together in Acrobat 4.0.

The system has been working perfectly and we recently upgraded to Acrobat
5.0 for some of the new features. Now however the AppleScripts are producing
a number of errors and even using Abobe's own documentation - Acrobat
Interapplication Communication Reference (IACReference.pdf) - we are still
getting errors.

The main error involves the inserting of one PDF page into another. This
produces the error:

document 1 of Application
"Acrobat 5.0" doesn't
understand the <<event
CAROinpg>> message.

The example below that's taken from Abobe's IAC document also throws up
errors;

AppleScript Example
insert pages document "AppleEvt.pdf" after 2 from document
"dev_acro.pdf" starting with 1 number of pages 4

Has anyone else had any problems with Acrobat 5 and AppleScript and does
anyone have any work-around's or solutions.
