Applescript to mute sound at shutdown

I've struggled unsuccessfully to create a script that resolves one of the
only things that annoy me about macs: If I'm up late listening to music on
my mac, then shut down, when I restart in the morning I have to suffer
through a start-up chime set to the volume level of the previous evening.
Surely an apple script in my "Shutdown Items" folder can resolve this
oversight in mac OS development (there should be a separate volume setting
for the start-up chime).
Any suggestions?
My Applescript will open the Volume control panel, but I can't get it to
change the "Main Volume" to "mute".
Faithfully yours,
