I'm tempted to say "yes, it can." We used an accounting system which was a
FileMaker runtime app, and we did certain operations upon the data using
AppleScript.

HOWEVER, I'm not sure that we didn't run the application under FileMaker
when running the script, and the app has been long since retired so I can't
test.
