Can I get help with iTunes & Limewire files?

I have tried to accomplish this on my own, but my Applescript abilities are
meager, so I'm appealing to the kindness of others on this list. I've also
posted on MacScripter, but so far there have been no takers.

The problem:
iTunes doesn't recognize mp3 files which I've downloaded from Limewire
until I trim the last 4 characters from the filename & replace them with
".mp3". Only then can I add them to iTunes' library.

The solution I would like:
A folder action which would do the trimming & replacing when a file is
added to the folder which I use to receive my Limewire downloads.

By the way, I seem to recall a column on Applescripts which dealt with this.
I thought it might have have been one of Bill Briggs', but a search of his
archives has been less than fruitful. Perhaps somebody else recalls such an
article?
