As Brennan told me online, and someone else mentioned offline, Akua Sweets
apparently does exactly what I'm looking for.

Being new to Applescript, I didn't even really know what an OSAX was, so I
searched online for "Akua Sweets" and downloaded it installed it in my
Scripting Additions folder and I'm still getting a lot of errors with the
example scripts.

But it's now dawning on me that the example scripts were written for a
different version and there's an updater in the package.

<sigh>

I'll figure it out eventually. Now I'm wondering how many example scripts
might depend upon some other OSAX. Are there several of these things that
serious scripters are pretty much assumed to have?

Thanks for the help, all. That was the missing piece of the puzzle that I
needed.
Mike
