Now, before I deselect it, can I rotate that selection as if it were
grouped?

each box rotates in its current position independent of each other. When you
select a series of boxes manually, then rotate them, they all rotate
relative to their position as the selection, even though they are ungrouped.
I find it difficult to deal with Quark's object model!
