Opening Hidden Folders in Finder

How can I open a hidden folder with the Finder in MacOSX?

Here is what I have so far:

tell application "Finder"
open folder "var" of the startup disk
end tell

I am logged in as root, so I should be able to access this
folder. It tells me that it can't find the folder.

Any suggestions?
