Dear scripters,
In case you haven't heard about this...
For the past year, I've been working on a once-in-a-lifetime keynote
event for this year's MacHack, June 20-23 in Dearborn MI.
About 18 months ago, I resurrected an idea I had back in '97 (when I
started working on these keynotes) to have Steve Wozniak and Andy
Hertzfeld return together for what I referred to as "tag-team"
story-telling. This transmogrified over the next 3+ years to the
following: to round up a whole bunch of the original Macintosh
development team for the MacHack 2001 keynote.
And so was born the concept of the "Creators of the Mac" keynote
panel. The following people are scheduled to be on the panel:
Andy Hertzfeld, Bud Tribble, Randy Wigginton, Bruce Horn, Daniel
Kottke, and Caroline Rose. (If you don't know who these folks are,
find someone who has a 128K, 512K, Fat Mac, or Mac Plus, and look
inside the case for the signatures.)
and the big (unannounced) surprises:
Jef Raskin and Bill Atkinson! (Bill -- who created QuickDraw and
HyperCard -- left the software business and is now a nature
photographer. He declines to have any involvement with the software
business and has resisted all offers to speak and possibilities for
reunion.)
There are three events that have come out of this:
- The eight Mac Creators listed above will comprise the keynote panel.
- Jef Raskin (who refers to himself as the inventor of the Mac) is
doing a special session on interface design on Thursday, with the
working title "Making Macs Fit for Human Consumption". To wit: "I'd
love to make some impact on the way people design for the Mac."
- Woz has agreed to do a Fireside Chat (storytelling, jokes,
questions) on Thursday evening...complete with tacky fake fireplace
for the stage.
Some of these folks will be sticking around for more of the
conference, so there's an opportunity to get up-close-and-personal
with some of them.
If you are (or can be) anywhere near Detroit this week, you might
want to consider attending. The conference starts at midnight this
Wednesday (that's 12:01 AM Thursday). If you want to go, you've got
to sign up quickly. With a limit of 350 registrants, I imagine that
the conference will fill up this year.
