The short answer is that the default memory allocation for script
applications is insufficient.

Get Info (in the Finder) on your applet and increase its 'minimum' &
'preferred' memory allocations to a megabyte or more, depending on your
machine's available memory.

It is possible to put your own 'size' resource into a scipt application
using ResEdit, but the Script Editor resets it if you subsequently
resave, so it needs to be done last thing.
