The book I found most helpful is Ethen Wilde's "Applescript for the
Internet". It's sort of misnamed and slightly dated now. It actually covers
the desktop and a wide range of applications (including FileMaker and
Photoshop). There is also an accompanying web site with the scripts. This is
one of the Visual Quick Start Books from Peachpit Press. This book gives you
instant how-to and tells you line by line what's going on. I've bought other
Applescript books and they just sit on my shelf. I keep this one in my
Powerbook carrying case because it can provide easy and quick reference.
Mr. Wilde has another book coming out sometime called "Applescript for
Applications". Peach Pit Press and all the online bookstores list these two
books.
As for scripting Photoshop in particular, the manual that comes with the
PhotoScripter plugin is top notch. Again, not alot of high brow just the
scripts and how they work. A PDF of the manual and a 30 day trial version of
PhotoScripter are located on the Photoshop 6 CD. The plugin is like $300.
But if you do a lot of automatic Photoshop, it pays for itself real quick.
If Main Event has a booth at MacWorld, I highly reccomend visiting them.
Maybe they'll offer some sort of PhotScripter and Scripter combo discount at
the show?
You can also check out the scripting support that comes with programs.
Illustrator 9, FileMaker (any version), and QuarkXPress 4 (just for
examples) all have example scripts and documentation either on the
installation CD or in the program folder itself.
