For what little it is worth, a Mac will not respond to Ping until some
client on the Mac has used the connection to the world. That seems
consistent with the 0.0.0.0 address in the same state.

And points to a solution: a scripted access to something in the world
before attempting to read the IP...actually, an access attempt you know
will fail should be enough.
