creating aliases to not yet existing files?

dear listmembers,
I'd like to automate creating a whole bunch of aliases to image files at
once that I will burn to cdrom afterwards. Creating the aliases to the
images is not a problem. However if I try to change the original item
reference, applescript doesn't allow me to, because the original items don't
exist.
Is it possible to bypass this with Applescript and MacOS 8.1?
