is 1.6 OS X specific, or will it run under 9.1 as well?
There will be an AppleScript 1.6 update for Mac OS 9; it should be available on
March 24 as well.

As Shane pointed out, Carbonized additions *are* the native ones. It's
unfortunately not feasible to run a Carbonized scripting addition on Mac OS 9,
because if it's ever triggered in a non-Carbon application, it tends to do
really horrible things to your system -- at a minimum, the application will
crash. We therefore have to maintain a strict separation.

You bet. There are (sort of) four different scripting addition folders: one for
the system (only Apple-installed ones go here), one for the machine (visible to
all users on that machine), one for the network (visible to all users on the
local network; this requires your admin to do some clever things), and one for
the current user. Obviously, each user has their own addition folder, which is
why I said "sort of four." That way, you can install an addition just for
yourself without disrupting anyone else, or you can force it on everybody.
