Extract Picture

I've inherited a script that includes the line (f being a JPEG):

set cell "Picture" of the first record to (extract picture from f) as
picture

The JPEG was created in PhotoShop 5.5 with the BoxTop plug-in to contain
thumbnails for both Mac and PC platforms. I believe the "extract picture"
is grabbing the embedded thumbnail and the script places it into a Filemaker
Pro 5.0v3 container field. My problem is that the images are not viewable
by our PC users. I was told that it used to work and suddenly stopped as
though something else changed. They see a blank and white image saying
Quicktime PICT.

My question is can anybody tell me exactly what "extract picture" is
grabbing? My suspicion is that this never worked and a different approach is
needed. The larger script allows a quick batch update of earlier
(compatible) images grabbed using an iBot, iView and AppleScript to grab the
initial un-color corrected images.

An AppleScript newbie. Thanks for any help or suggested places to look.
I've searched several AppleScript books and web sites, information about
graphics formats and Filemaker Pro documentation and books.
