Folks,
Just completed the four 8-hour per day hands-on AppleScript class for
administrators at the University of Virginia. The class of 40 drew not
only from UVA but also from colleges in the area and the public schools
system. The class was extremely successful and I believe is a major step
towards keeping Macs at the University which as of late have been
"dissappearing" quickly.
Some of the issues uncovered by the class were:
- problems with the mount volume command in 9.1. About a third of the
time it would lock up computers or fail.
- lack of support from Oracle for a Mac 9.1 client for the school's admin
software. Oracle has said they will not be offering support for a Mac
client.
- Because of problems a while back with At Ease and MacManager, they
dropped those packages to use a third-party tool (begins with a "G",
sorry I can't remember the name). They're not sure of what will be
available for Mac OS 9.1 and Mac OS X.
Feature requests included:
-- XML suport in AppleScript to read and write XML data. They're planning
to migrate all school data to XML format.
-- Better string and list parsing tools: last occurance of, replace in,
sort, every item of list whose, etc.
-- An "as passowrd" parameter in the display dialog command to only show
bullets for text.
display dialog "Enter the password" default answer "" as password buttons
{"Cancel", "OK"}
-- NT, Windows 2000, and Solaris support in the mount volume command
All in all, it went very well and I told them that I'd return for a
touch-up seminar later in the year.
With regard to Mac OS X: a couple admins said they're looking at it but
have no plans for implementation. Generally though they're unaware of
what it is, jhow it works, and its road-map, etc.
