sudo -s

saves messing about in NetInfo, whilst being every bit as dangerous
(actually, it's a bit safer since one needs to do it for each session as
root).

By the way, every command sudo allows you to execute appears in the
system.log file (not counting the commands while in -s, I think). So at
least you may be able to see what you did wrong to destroy the system.
Small comfort.

As I said on MacFixIt earlier: when I'm root and type
rm <whatever>
I like to take my hands away from the keyboard and contemplate what I'm
about to do before hitting return.
