Aside from quicker, consider what could happen very near midnight: with
the three calls, you get the day on one side of midnight and the month on
the other side. Not good if you start on the last day of a month. If this
happens to be the end of December 31, you could also get an unwanted year
mixed in.

I claim that the quicker issue is much less important than the correctness
issue.
