Checking for Running apps in X

Is there any way to tell what applications are running under Mac OS X? The following, which worked under Mac OS 9 doesn't work:

tell application "Finder"
set process_list to the name of every process
end tell

It seems that X doesn't like the word "process" at all, or maybe it's just the X Finder that doesn't like it? Does the Dock.app keep track of running processes instead of the Finder? I can't get into the Dock's dictionary.
