Thanks for your reply. What I think you're saying is that the
group must exist on the machine that's running the script as well as the
group that already exists on the server?
I can't run the script on the server as it's a Solaris box running
Ethershare. That would mean I have to create the users and groups list
twice and manage it in two places. Is there not a way that I can make
AppleScript accept the group name?

Hmmm... You sure that the Owner isn't set instead?
Also, you need to make sure that File Sharing is running when you try to
do this.
