OSX and Applet permissions

I have a nice AppleScript application which manages uploaded data. Touch
wood, it's all working fine (bug testing over the next couple of days).
Anyway, I thought that it'd be neat to get the data uploaded to an FTP
folder under OSX and get the AppleScript to run under OS X. Unfortunately, I
failed at the first hurdle. The FTP upload folder belongs to one user while
the AppleScript application should run with my permissions. Unfortunately,
the AppleScript application cannot access the contents of the FTP upload
folder under these conditions.
How do I give an AppleScript root user permissions and/or how do I set up
permissions so that the FTP upload folder is available to me as a user?
I guess I need to understand how to administer permissions under OS X - it's
all a bit opaque to me at the moment.
TIA for any assistance/pointers
Simon Forster
