That actually isn't necessarily true. There are always people who simply
want it done a different way, no matter what we do.

That is where we're headed, but the "usefulness" of the current archives is
sort of irrelevant to that, given the need to protect our users from being
leaked. The bottom line is pretty simple: these lists are only useful as
long as people post to them, and if people come to feel their addresses will
leak to spammers, they'll leave (quickly). So protection of users from this
is an utmost priority, and I'll be blunt about it: if I felt we couldn't
have archives AT ALL without exposing users to the spammers, we would have
no archives, and we would have no tolerance of users setting up their own.
Now, I don't believe that. But I want people to understand where I stand on
the "access vs. protection" issue. There are always going to be SOME risks
of exposure in a public forum, but I don't have to make it easy. And most
people who put up archives put little to no thought into the spam-harvesting
issue, which ends up making what *I* do meaningless.
The trick is to come up with usable, positive compromises between these
issues. But realize the reality is that "useful" is trumps be "safe and
secure" in this situation.
