Bill Fancher developed an osax which does just that, called 'tick count' -
in fact it may have been the very first OS X osax. It was part of an
investigation he made to discover whether there was a performance difference
in OS X between osaxen and faceless background applications (there turned
out to be a huge difference in favor of the osax version - this was back in
OS 10.0.0 and 10.0.4). But it is very useful in its own right.

I noticed recently that Bill had not posted 'tick count' at osaxen.com:
perhaps he does not want to encumber the world with extra versions of osaxen
that do the same thing as each other, taking some name space with it. You
may have noticed that Jon Pugh has been telling us that he has switched to
OS X very recently, so perhaps an OS X version of Jon's Commands, including
(the ticks), is forthcoming (awaited with bated breath here). In the
interim, I'm sure Bill would let you have a copy, or I can supply one if
Bill agrees.
