Regardless, I don't believe that it's 'officially' documented anywhere. There are probably references to it on the AppleScript Sourcebook.

The fact that there's a limit at all is kind of a design flaw. The limit isn't documented because it's (theoretically) configurable using the 'scsz' resource. However, I couldn't get that to work, so maybe there's a bug as well.
