There are a few storage devices that actually send an Apple event when a
disk is inserted or removed. I believe you can write a stay-open AppleScript
to monitor those signals. Sorry, but I don't recall the manufacturer(s). I
know I put references to one or two of them somewhere on my web site.
Judicious use of my search engine might turn them up.
